Music Statement of Intent​​​

INTENT  

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all children: 

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music.
  • be taught to sing, create and compose music.
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated. 

 

At Cotford St Luke Primary School, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the musical tastes and interests of others and the role that music may play in each of our lives.  We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. 

 

IMPLEMENTATION 

Music is planned and taught throughout the school by the Music Subject Leader. Links are made to the wider curriculum where this will enhance the learning in music. A two-year programme of units, objectives and skills are in place that give children an opportunity to appreciate, compose and perform a variety of musical genres and historical music.  

Music at Cotford St Luke ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. The elements of music are taught in the classroom lessons so that children can use some of the language of music to dissect it. They also learn how to compose, focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds into their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music.  

Music is also woven into wider school life with regular opportunities for singing and performance in other curriculum areas, assemblies, extra-curricular clubs, and in-school and external performances.   

 

IMPACT 

The integral nature of music and the learner creates a rich palette from which a child may access fundamental abilities such as: appreciation, achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection. Music will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as cultures from across the world. Children are able to enjoy music in many ways, as a listener, creator and performer.  

 

The Music Subject Leader currently teaches all the Music curriculum across the school and as a result can constantly and consistently monitor the extent to which pupils have understood concepts, developed skills and retained key knowledge. We achieve this through discussions with pupils, observations in lessons and through reviewing the work and performances children create. The Subject Leader assesses outcomes for pupils at the end of every unit of work so that areas for development can be identified to enhance future learning.
